I have decided to do a little m&a/streamlining/jit/horizontal merge/other meaningless buzzword – and combine my blogs. No more hawaiitim, I realized I barely had the desire to do one blog. And to inaugurate this new venture (and brand myself effectively), I have decided to post several video clips. Because as we all know that videos are fun, relevant, and a great way of communicating entertainingly.

Spring Semester is underway out here at UH Manoa, and it looks to be a good one (I think anyway). The Spring always seems to fly by faster than the Fall, and the freshmen seem a bit more aware of what’s going on – though not always. Here are some snapshots from the past few weeks:

One Mean Stick

There comes a time in a surfer’s life when 10′ rental boards just don’t cut it anymore. He needs something shorter and faster, but of course this requires some dollars. Fortunately, a friend of mine offered to buy me one! Who does that? Getting my first “stick” was pretty exciting. I got a brand new board, originally over $400, for only $240! Pretty amazing stuff. And now I feel like my stake in Hawaii has risen some. Surfing is pretty relaxing for me actually, although I usually only encounter 1-3′ waves (Hawaii measurement). It is one of the things I’ve found quite fun out here. Although I have yet to get a picture of me standing, here are some others:

Joy in Adversity

These past couple weeks have been challenging. Confusion, stress, anxiety, and fatigue would describe it nicely. The Lord is doing much in and around us, but the inward emotional battles do exist. Two passages from scripture have been especially encouraging.

Deuteronomy 8:11-18, in a modified ESV paraphrase says, “Take care lest you forget the Lord your God… who fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers did not know, that he might humble you and test you, to do you good in the end. Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’ You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power.”

It is in times of need that we begin to remember the Lord. If not for challenging times, how would we know our need? These days are a joy, for they allow the Lord to humble and test us, that He would do us good in the end. It would be far more horrific if we actually believed we were able to do this by ourselves. These times remind us of our weaknesses, and our grave need to depend solely on the Lord for strength. Remembrance and thanksgiving begins today, in the midst of confusion and the unknown.

Proverbs 17:17 says this, “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”

Mike and I have had some challenging moments in our friendship. It is at times almost laughable how differently we think and communicate. But in these moments we have an opportunity to grow from being friends to brothers. Adverse conditions can either destroy relationships or strengthen them. What an opportunity we have to work out our communication problems, and learn more about our relational deficiencies. As we have been told many times (from married folk), our wives will be grateful someday.

Sharks & Golf

Sharks and golf, I love both. Even Greg Norman, “The Shark,” he’s a cool dude. Here are a couple pictures of what my days off looked like last week.

Snorkeling at Shark’s Cove. I don’t believe there are sharks in these waters, only schools of fish and underwater caves. I did cut my thumb on some of the rocks, but my bleeding did not attract any sharks. Perhaps someday I will encounter a shark.

Pali Golf Course is pretty sweet. It looks like a lot of the landscape on the windward side, a bit like Jurassic Park I think. This morning was a rainy and wet one, lots of clouds and occasional sunshine. The best part about this golf course is that it only costs $8 per 9 holes. Although my excitement briefly faded when the dudes we played with said they played for $10/mo back in the 1970s. Dang, if only I was a baby boomer.
